Here Comes Mama!

A quick loose sketch of Bette Midler in her role as Rose, from the movie "Gypsy".  This was an exercise for me in speed drawing, and drawing from a reference. 

This film speaks to me in so many ways, I love how complicated people can be, and how convoluted they can make the relationships that bind them together.  I thought Bette made a stupendous Rose.  I liked the slight hint of sex appeal to her, where Rosalind Russell always felt a bit uptight in comparison.  (I can see why Herbie went for Rose, with Bette's little wiggle giving her that extra oomph.)
